Microsoft Fabric as the Data Platform at Baloise

How Baloise modernised its data platform with Microsoft Fabric

An insight into the implementation with ALTYCA as the lead partner
From a fragmented legacy data landscape to an integrated, scalable foundation for Data & AI

At a glance

Challenge

Over the years, Baloise developed a complex and fragmented data landscape. Data was distributed across multiple systems, difficult to access, and could only be utilised with significant manual effort. A scalable, unified foundation was missing.

Solution

Together with ALTYCA and Microsoft, a modern data platform was built based on Microsoft Fabric. By integrating data engineering, analytics, and BI on a single platform, a centralised, standardised, and scalable data foundation was established.

Benefits

The new platform enables faster insights, reduces manual effort, and establishes the foundation for self-service and future AI use cases. Data is now centrally available, consistent, and can be leveraged where it creates real business value.

The full story

Over the years, Baloise developed an increasingly complex and fragmented data landscape. Data was spread across multiple systems, with differing structures, unclear ownership, and consequently a high level of manual effort required to make it usable. At the same time, business demands continued to grow: faster insights, greater self-service capabilities, and the ability to leverage data as a strategic foundation for decision-making and future AI applications. It became clear that a consolidated, scalable, and future-ready data platform was required.

Following a structured evaluation, Baloise selected Microsoft Fabric as the technological foundation and ALTYCA as the implementation partner. ALTYCA took on a leading role throughout the project, being responsible for the target architecture design, technical implementation, as well as overall project management and coordination. In close collaboration with the business units and in alignment with Microsoft, an integrated data platform was established that not only delivers from a technological perspective, but also proves sustainable and effective in day-to-day operations.

«The collaboration with ALTYCA was straightforward, technically strong, and conducted on equal footing. We were able to significantly simplify our data platform while simultaneously laying the foundation for future requirements.»

With the introduction of Microsoft Fabric and OneLake, the existing data landscape was unified and significantly simplified. ALTYCA led the implementation of data pipelines, the integration of various data sources, the development of a scalable architecture, and the coordination between business units, IT, and technology partners. Today, the solution serves as a central data foundation for multiple business units, providing a consistent basis for reporting, analytics, and advanced use cases.

The result is a platform that not only delivers from a technical perspective but also creates measurable business value: significantly faster time-to-insight, reduced manual effort, and enhanced capabilities for business users to work with data independently. At the same time, the new architecture establishes a solid foundation for future developments in Data & AI, enabling Baloise to leverage data as a strategic driver of success.

«Microsoft Fabric brings together data engineering, analytics, and BI on a single platform, thereby creating the foundation for integrated data solutions and AI scenarios.»

«Our ambition was not only to introduce a new technology, but to take end-to-end responsibility as the implementation partner and, together with Baloise, build a solution that works in daily operations and delivers sustainable value.»

Architecture

The target architecture is based on Microsoft Fabric and was designed and implemented by ALTYCA to centrally integrate data from various on-premises and cloud sources, standardise its processing, and make it available for reporting, analytics, and advanced use cases. Source systems are connected via data gateways and shortcuts, while data flows are centrally orchestrated and monitored through Data Factory and metadata-driven pipelines. This results in a standardised and scalable data integration framework with clearly defined processes and high transparency.

Data processing follows a structured medallion approach with Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers. Raw data is ingested in a structured manner, progressively refined, and transformed into quality-assured, business-ready data models. For transformation and modelling, ALTYCA leverages dbt, enabling transparent, version-controlled, and maintainable data models over time. In the Gold layer, a central data warehouse is established using a star schema, serving as the foundation for semantic models and reporting.

The architecture is complemented by Azure DevOps for CI/CD, Key Vault for secrets management, and a well-structured workspace and security concept. This ensures that the platform is not only high-performing, but also secure, scalable, and well positioned to meet future requirements in the field of Data & AI.

Also relevant for other organisations

Many organisations today face a similar starting point: legacy data landscapes, increasing demands from the business, and the ambition to leverage data and AI in a more targeted way. Without a clean, integrated, and scalable data foundation, however, much of this potential remains untapped.

The project with Baloise demonstrates how this foundation can be successfully established: through a clear architecture, consistent execution, and a platform that not only meets current requirements but can also evolve in a controlled manner. What proves critical is not just the choice of technology, but having an implementation partner who takes a long-term perspective on the platform.

In close collaboration with Microsoft, ALTYCA ensures that new capabilities within Microsoft Fabric are continuously assessed and aligned with the product roadmap and proven best practices. This allows the platform to evolve in a structured way without compromising stability, clarity, or governance.

For organisations, this means a modern data platform that not only addresses current challenges, but also provides a robust foundation for future Data & AI initiatives.

A modern data platform is not a one-time project, but an ongoing process of development - and that is where the real differentiation lies.
