Customer Story
How Winterthur makes urban development tangible.
At a glance
Challenge
Exciting up-to-date figures about the city of Winterthur were hidden away in Excel spreadsheets and PDFs, not publicly accessible. The city was therefore looking for a solution to make this data available in an interactive way.
Solution
Together with ALTYCA, the city of Winterthur implemented an interactive dashboard that presents key data in an intuitive way. The dashboard is available both online and as a 50-inch touchscreen in the town hall.
Benefit
With just one tap, citizens, tourists, and municipal employees can explore, compare, and understand city statistics – from population growth to economic data.
The full story
Cities are more than streets and buildings – they are data worlds full of fascinating insights. But how can this information be made accessible to everyone?
For the city of Winterthur, the challenge was no different. Economic data, fire department deployments, environmental indicators – all this information existed, but it was hidden in Excel spreadsheets and PDFs. To make the data come alive, the city of Winterthur, as part of its SmartCity program, developed a dashboard together with ALTYCA that integrates current figures on key topics and visualizes them. The intuitive design, created by Interactive Things specifically for touchscreens, was implemented by ALTYCA in Power BI.
The dashboard is now available online and on a 55-inch touchscreen in the town hall. It gives everyone – citizens, tourists, and municipal employees – playful access to the most important city statistics. With just a tap, trends can be discovered, compared, and understood.
Office of Urban Development, City of Winterthur
“ALTYCA implemented the ‘Winterthur in Figures’ dashboard to our full satisfaction. The agile approach, the friendly and proactive communication, and the technical expertise made this project a success for Smart City Winterthur.”
Uwe Thümmel, Project Lead Data Analytics

Applicable to other organizations
The way Winterthur makes data accessible is relevant not only for municipalities. Companies, for example, can present their business figures or market data in interactive dashboards instead of relying on static reports – for instance, for revenue and cost analysis, HR and market trends, or customer and product development.
The city of Winterthur demonstrates: making data available creates transparency and strengthens the understanding of key developments.
